Membership Rules

  1. Membership is open to full-time members of UBC faculty, staff, graduate students, postdocs, and to UBC alumni. The UBC Faculty/Alumni Squash Club Executive may, at its discretion, revoke or refuse to renew the membership of a person whose conduct is contrary to the best interests of the Club and/or the Club's membership.

  2. When a new application is approved, the Secretary will request from Parking and Access Control Services a key to be issued. Parking and Access Control will then inform the member when the key is ready and and where it can be picked up. New members who do not hold UBC-issued keys will need to pay a deposit (which will be refunded when the key is returned). Each member is responsible for ensuring that the court is locked and the lights are out after playing.

  3. The squash court is available 7 days a week, 24 hours a day, but reservations will only be accepted for 45-minute sessions starting at 0630 through to 2130 h.

  4. Reservations are subjected to the following:

    1. Members may book a reservation on-line at www.ubcsquash.com, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. (REMEMBER TO CANCEL A RESERVATION IF YOU ARE UNABLE TO USE IT.)

    2. When membership payment is made members will be instructed on how to book a court using our online system.

    3. A maximum of two reservations will be accepted (beginning at 0800h Sunday) for the following week for a player and a partner.

    4. Members can make only one back-to-back booking per week.

    5. Members wishing additional reservations for the following week must wait until Sunday of the actual week in question.

    6. Members can book as often as they want, within reason, and whenever they want during the week of play.

    7. Guests are welcome, but to a reasonable degree. Repeat guests should be encouraged to seek membership in the club if they are eligible.

  5. REMEMBER TO CANCEL A RESERVATION IF YOU ARE UNABLE TO USE IT. If you find that you have been forced to take an earlier or later booking, and note that the preferred slot remained unused, please advise one of the Executive listed in #9 below.

  6. In all cases members with reservations take precedence over members without reservations.

  7. Annual membership is $40, with an initiation fee of $40 for new members. The initiation fee, however, is not required for registered graduate students, postdocs, or visiting faculty. Members not playing for periods of up to two years may retain their memberships during their absence by paying $6 per annum. Memberships are renewed in autumn, with first notice being given in September and deadline for application being 15 October. After 31 October only the current year's new membership numbers will be accepted by the booking service.

  8. No black-soled shoes or shoes worn in the street are allowed in the court. PLEASE SWEEP THE COURT AROUND THE EDGES BEFORE PLAYING and keep the changing room tidy.

  9. Any problems should be reported to Colin Brauner at brauner@zoology.ubc.ca, or Linda Herbert at ubc.squash@gmail.com.

The UBC Faculty/Alumni Squash Club Executive may, at its discretion, revoke or refuse to renew the membership of a person whose conduct is contrary to the best interests of the Club and/or the Club’s membership.
